From Past to Present Explore the Vast Landscapes of Northern Mono County
7 Hours (Door-to-Door) – We’ll start our tour by visiting the June Lake Loop, where you’ll see why fisherman are so enthusiastic about coming back every summer. The next stop is Mono Lake. There, you’ll learn more about its interesting history and unique ecosystem. Finally, we’ll go back in time and experience a real ghost town that was once full of life and great expectations. The Bodie State Park tour is not to be missed!
June Lake Loop: The June Lake Loop leads you past June Lake, and the smaller Gull Lake, Silver Lake, and Grant Lake. In the winter these lakes are frozen over. In the summer they are a wonderful attraction for fishing, boating, and swimming. Silver Lake and Grant Lake are the most dramatic and there are many turnouts along the way to take in the views. The June Lake shores are dotted with the local businesses and popular swimming beaches.
Mono Lake and the Tufas: This inland sea is known for its bird population, scenic value and delicate tufa formations. The lake is located off U.S. 395, 30 miles north of Mammoth Lakes. The Mono Lake Tufa State Reserve offers interpretive tours of the shoreline, nature walks, slide shows and other activities.
Bodie State Historic Park: A genuine California gold-mining ghost town, at Bodie State Park, Visitors can walk down the deserted streets of a town that once had a population of 10,000 people. Only a small part of the town survives. Interiors remain as they were left and stocked with goods. Designated as a National Historic Site and a State Historic Park in 1962, the remains of Bodie are being preserved in a state of “arrested decay”. Today this once thriving mining camp is visited by tourists, howling winds and an occasional ghost!
